Early Life
Born on August 15, 1959, in Ujjain, Dr. Sonal Singh embarked on a remarkable academic journey marked by excellence and curiosity. She earned an M.Sc. in Zoology, securing the prestigious fifth rank at her university. Her passion for knowledge then led her to library science, where she excelled by completing her B.Lib. with a notable third rank, followed by an M.Lib. and a Ph.D. in Library Science from Vikram University.
Dr. Singh’s commitment to education goes beyond her primary field of study. She holds diverse qualifications, including a B.Ed., B.Mus., and a PGDCA, along with diplomas in Vastu and Feng Shui. Her extensive academic accomplishments highlight her dedication to blending traditional and modern learning, making her a true lifelong learner.
Career Journey
Inspired by her mother’s legacy, Dr. Sonal Singh began her career in librarianship after earning an M.Sc. in Zoology and transitioning to library science. Her professional journey started at Kendriya Vidyalaya, where she served as a librarian for seven years. During this time, she also pursued a lectureship at Vikram University while diligently completing her Ph.D.
Dr. Singh has the distinct honor of being the first and only female Professor of Library and Information Science in Madhya Pradesh and is the senior-most LIS faculty member from the state. Currently, she serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Vikram University, where she also holds the prestigious positions of Professor of Library and Information Science and Chairperson of the Board of Studies. With over 14 years of administrative experience, she has led as the Head of the School of Studies in Library and Information Science at Vikram University, Ujjain.
Her illustrious career spans decades of dedicated teaching and mentorship. She has guided 23 Ph.D. candidates and one postdoctoral fellow to successful completions, alongside supervising numerous dissertations at the PG and M.Phil. levels. Dr. Singh’s unwavering commitment to nurturing academic talent has left a lasting impact on the field.
On her retirement on August 31, 2024, Dr. Singh was celebrated for her exceptional dedication and contributions, working tirelessly until her final day in service.
Research Guidance
Dr. Sonal Singh is a registered Ph.D. Supervisor at Vikram University for Library & Information Science. Additionally, she has supervised some Ph.D. candidates at Bhoj Open University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, when open universities were recognized as centers for Ph.D. research. One Post-Doctoral Research and twenty-three Ph.D. have been awarded under her able guidance. Her scholars have been appointed to various reputable institutes. She has also supervised thirty-six M.Phil dissertations and twenty-six M.Lib dissertations.​
